It all began with some broccoli.

Now, Kaitlin Cheung, a fifth-grader from Flocktown-Kossmann School, is headed to the state championship spelling bee in New Brunswick on Saturday, March 10 after taking first place in the Northern Regional Spelling Bee competition on March 3.

Cheung, who won the Long Valley Junior Women’s Club’s annual spelling bee at the Benedict A. Cucinella School in January, correctly spelled broccoli then, and nailed down ‘banquet’ and ‘barrette’ consecutively to win the regional competition.

Cheung properly spelled humanitarian, bicentennial, porous, and gnome in the regional bee as well.

The top six spellers from the Northern, Central and Southern regional bees will take part in Saturday’s competition.

Following Cheung to the state bee from the Northern region are: second place winner Emily Walker who represented the Junior Women’s Club of Harrington Park; third place winner was Krutkia Thakkar of Euclid School in Hasbrouck Heights; coming in fourth place was Aayush Singh representing JWC Harrington Park; fifth place winner was Jennie Shih representing the JWC of River Edge and sixth place winner was Aditi Chiney of the JWC of Rutherford.
