Jeremy Lin’s revival of New York’s season has prompted sports books to slash the Knicks’ odds of winning the National Basketball Association championship by more than 50 percent.

The Las Vegas Hotel and Casino lowered the Knicks’ chances of collecting their first NBA title since 1973 to 25-1. The Knicks’ future odds had been 50-1 before Lin was inserted into the starting lineup six games ago.

The former Harvard University point guard has since become the only player to score more than 20 points and win each of his first five starts since the NBA merged with the American Basketball Association in 1976. The Knicks have won seven straight games overall to improve their record to 15-15.

“They’ve been supported in the last week pretty heavily so the liability adds up,” Jeff Sherman, the LVH assistant sports book manager, said in a telephone interview. “Between the Lin phenomenon, the Knicks on a winning streak, bettering their position and the money we’ve seen coming across the window, it’s a combination that causes them to go down.”

Although the Knicks are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference, their championship odds at LVH are now eighth among the league’s 30 teams.

Lin has been the impetus, revitalizing a team that’s been without All-Star forwards Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire for much of the winning streak. Anthony has totaled six minutes in the past five games because of a groin strain, while Stoudemire returned to the Knicks two days ago after a four-game absence following his brother’s death.

John Avello, director of race and sports operations at the Wynn Las Vegas, said he lowered the Knicks’ odds of taking the NBA title to 20-1 from 30-1 because Lin may be “the missing part” of the offense. The Knicks had lost 11 of 13 games before Lin started seeing extensive playing time with 25 points off the bench in a Feb. 4 win over the New Jersey Nets.

“Now the question is how is Lin and Carmelo and Stoudemire going to mix together,” Avello said by phone from his Las Vegas office. “What’s going to happen when we get all three of them? Is Lin going to get less shots, are they going to go back to the way the Knicks had been playing?”

Lin, 23, wasn’t drafted after graduation from Harvard and then was cut by two NBA teams before being signed by the Knicks on Dec. 27. During their 8-15 start, the Knicks used Toney Douglas, Iman Shumpert and Mike Bibby at point guard before turning to the 6-foot-3 Lin, who was a unanimous first-team all Ivy League selection during his senior year at Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Harvard in 2010.

Lin scored 28 points in his first career start against the Utah Jazz on Feb. 6, and then had 23 points and 10 assists in a win over Washington two days later. He scored 38 points against the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 10, had 20 points against Minnesota the following day, and two nights ago totaled 27 points and 11 assists in Toronto while hitting the winning three-pointer in the final second.

Against the Sacramento Kings at Madison Square Garden last night, Lin had a career-high 13 assists in a 100-85 win.

“There is a new energy,” Lin said during a Feb. 14 news conference. “Everyone is excited. It’s not because of me. It’s because we’re coming together as a team.”

Online sports book Bovada.lv has lowered its odds on the Knicks to win the championship to 18-1 from 40-1. Now, Bovada’s oddsmakers are instead listing Lin’s odds of winning the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award at 40-1.

Sports books are also listing proposition bets to take advantage of the attention on Lin, whose play has boosted the Knicks’ ticket and apparel sales. At Lucky’s Race and Sports Book in Las Vegas, bettors could wager whether Lin would surpass or fall short of his projected total of 22.5 points and eight assists at home against the Kings. He finished with 10 points after sitting out the fourth quarter.

“Whatever creates interest is worthwhile,” Jimmy Vaccaro, director of sports operations at Lucky’s, said by phone. “In the world we live in, in the five-week stretch after the Super Bowl and before the NCAA tournament heating up in March, we welcome anything that brings any attention to the books.”

Week in Review: Major Changes Coming to LV - Patch.com

? Back to Article Embed | Share ?? ? The federal-style building on West Mill Road, on the preserved land of Scott Farm, will be home to the Weiss family, who will begin a wellness center on the property.

Long Valley Patch learned about a bevy of changes being made to Washington Township in the coming weeks, months and years, and reported on as much of it as possible.

As always, if you’re looking for a full plate of news from the past week, go here. For the bigger headlines, continue reading.

At the beginning of the week, we published three stories about two new Long Valley land owners, whose visions could transform the township for years to come. Dr. Ron Weiss has purchased hundreds of acres of land to farm and create a homeopathic-style wellness center on West Mill Road. Just next door, Sean Campbell, a hedge fund manager who also bought hundreds of acres of land, will begin a hard apple cider orchard and operate it like a winery. To see how this is all going to shape up from an architectural and agricultural standpoint, go here.

Washington Township’s Office of Emergency Management has created a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) that will be made of volunteers. The focus of the group is to assist fire, first aid and police personnel during a disaster or emergency, like the ones Long Valley faced in 2011. To learn more about the group, and how one can take part, go here.

The West Morris Regional Board of Education’s meetings have been taped and broadcast since December, funded by private citizens. The board this week passed a resolution stating it would now accept donations from the public to fund those tapings. To find out more, go here.

The Washington Township Committee has tentatively approved to major budget items as requested by the fire and first aid departments. The Long Valley Fire Company is in need of a new fire truck, and the first aid squad has requested a new ambulance. Go here to find out more, and vote in the poll at the bottom of the article.

Finally, as the week wound down, the New Jersey Assembly approved a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in the state. Long Valley Patch probed this discussion with local clergy to get their opinion on the topic. To find out more, and weigh in with your thoughts, read this.

It was another great week in Long Valley, and we hope you enjoyed it.

The Louis Vuitton Brea GM is one of those bags that women drool over. Not because it’s a Louis Vuitton, simply gorgeous and has a $2,410 price tag. That means you can show off how your style is inspired by the Housewives of Atlanta, Orange County, Beverly Hills, etc…but also keep grounded with the fact it? can hold your tech accessories without looking like a bulky carrying case. The Brea GM is inspired by the the doctor’s bag of yesteryear and aren’t we all walking tech doctors now with apps and technology at our fingertips?

LV Brea GM 572x423 The Doctor is in with the Louis Vuitton Brea GM Laptop Bag

The Brea GM features the classic LV Monogram design on a Vernis leather. It measures a 15.35 x 10.63 x5.91, has trimmings in natural cowhide, adjustable straps, two interior pockets, and one zippered pocket. So the bag may cost more than the stuff you got inside of it, but it is sooo worth it.

Nicole L.V. Mullis: A winter with no winter - Battle Creek Enquirer

Last year was my family's first winter in Canada. Being Michiganders, we were prepared for the snow in southern Ontario. What we weren't prepared for was the celebration. Canadians love winter; every cloudy, cold bit of it.

They walk in it, run in it, skate in it, sled in it. We've seen teenagers outside the Dairy Queen eating Blizzards during a blizzard. We've seen moms strolling babies in sub-zero wind chill. We've seen retired folks in motorized wheelchairs motoring down the icy sidewalks.

I think this positive winter attitude has a lot to do with hockey. Canadians are crazy about the game. They play it, watch it and talk about it. Their kids learn to skate early, hockey stick in hand. They have national teams, provincial teams, regional teams and neighborhood teams.

Hockey isn't just a winter thing; it's a Canadian thing. When spring arrives, they drag hockey nets into the streets, using balls instead of pucks, concrete instead of ice and sneakers instead of skates. During summer, they park their cars in the driveway, leaving the garage free for puck-handling drills and slap shot practice. When fall hits, the school kids play hockey during recess, in the gym or anytime three or four are gathered with a stick.

Still, hockey thrives best in winter. And so do Canadians. Their garage doors close and any stretch of concrete they can hose down is turned into ice. Neighbors groom the local ponds, furnishing them with nets, benches and shovels. I remember the first time I saw a hockey net half-submerged in a late-summer pond. I thought it was an obnoxious bout of littering. I soon learned it was a Canadian symbol of community.

When the first snow falls, Canadians start talking about outdoor ice conditions. They travel with skates, sticks and shovels in their cars. Given a free moment, a few buddies and some outdoor ice, they can clear off the snow and enjoy a skate. It is easy, free and fun.

This winter hasn't been a true winter in southern Ontario. Temperatures above freezing and a green January have made for lousy outdoor ice. People tromp around in sneakers and unzipped jackets, grumbling about the clear skies and the tulips breaking through February's ground. They get excited whenever the snow falls, but it never lasts the week. The ponds are slushy and the large stretches of park reserved for outdoor rinks are brown and deserted.

I've noticed the nets and sticks are back on my neighbors' lawns. The garage doors are open again, cars out, frustrated slap shots ringing off the walls. The kids are playing hockey in the streets, three months early and none too happy about it. And while I'm enough of a Michigander to consider a mild winter a small blessing, it is clearly a curse to my Canadian friends.

Recently, my family drove through Kitchener, where we saw a large crowd gathered in front of city hall. Drawing closer, we discovered they were skating on a small stretch of meticulously maintained outdoor ice. They moved shoulder-to-shoulder, more like vibrating molecules than carefree skaters. There was no room for hockey nets. I couldn't help but feel bad.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I wish we had a real winter. Canada just isn't the same.

Lin's Exploits Lead Las Vegas Books to Cut Knicks' Title Odds - BusinessWeek

February 16, 2012, 12:23 AM EST By Erik Matuszewski

Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Jeremy Lin’s revival of New York’s season has prompted sports books to slash the Knicks’ odds of winning the National Basketball Association championship by more than 50 percent.

The Las Vegas Hotel and Casino lowered the Knicks’ chances of collecting their first NBA title since 1973 to 25-1. The Knicks’ future odds had been 50-1 before Lin was inserted into the starting lineup six games ago.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: LV hopes to build on last year's run - San Angelo Standard Times

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Despite losing six talented seniors from last year's team that made the playoffs for the first time in three years, optimism is high for the 2012 Lake View High School softball team to pick up where the Maidens left off.

The Maidens finished 11-22 overall last year and were fourth in District 8-4A with a 4-6 mark to grab the final playoff spot. Fourth-ranked Burleson ended Lake View's season with a 10-1 bi-district victory.

Lake View head coach Kay Wagner says the Maidens showed first-game jitters in a 15-0 five-inning loss on the road against Midland High in the season opener Tuesday, but she feels her team can make another push at the playoffs this spring.

"We're a little bit younger and a little less experienced, but we have good heart and we have good desire and we have good skills," Wagner said.

"It's just a matter of all of us coming together to understand the person on the left and the right of you and trusting the people next to you."

Lake View and Central will co-host the San Angelo "Bash It Out" Tournament today through Saturday at the Central Softball Complex and the Angelo State University Softball Complex. The Maidens open the tournament against Central's junior varsity at 10 a.m. today at the Central Softball Complex, followed by a 4 p.m. matchup with Junction at Central.

"We're looking forward to staying at home and being in front of our own crowd and in front of our own parents," Wagner said. "We're hoping that this weekend will add to our experience and our trusting of each other and stuff like that. That's what tournaments are for."

Wagner is still trying to solidify her roster, but she has a core of returning players showing leadership for the younger players.

The four seniors are outfielder Kristina Martinez, infielder/outfielder Victoria Diaz, pitcher/infielder Natalie Flores and utility player Allyson Frost.

Junior Trini-Lynn Gonzales (infielder/third baseman) and sophomores Celeste Silva (pitcher/infielder) and Amanda Ramage (shortstop/catcher/infielder) are three of the top underclassmen. Ramage was the 8-4A Newcomer of the Year last year.

"We look for them to be great leaders," Wagner said. "We've got a great little nucleus there."

Flores expects the Maidens to get back to the postseason in 2012.

"Getting a taste of (the playoffs) last year, it was very interesting," Flores said. "I have a very high expectation that we will go this year because I know that this team has a lot of potential.

"I think the taste of the playoffs for the returners from last year is going to rub off on us this year so that we will have that motivation to make it."

Ramage says it will just be a matter of finding the right chemistry.

"I think we have a good group of girls and if we just all stay together and talk and communicate, we should be able to go really far," Ramage said.

The Maidens say their laid-back coach instills confidence in them, which pays dividends on the diamond.

"She's an awesome coach," Ramage said of Wagner. "She's the best coach I've ever had. I love playing for her."

And Wagner says her team won't be satisfied with having to settle for the final playoff spot in a tough district. Waco Midway is perennially one of the strongest teams in the state and is once again the 8-4A favorite.

"Instead of fourth, we'd like to be third or second," Wagner said. "We've taken more time in the offseason to become better hitters. We need to get back to our fundamentals on the field and make sure that we don't make the errors that cost us."

The Maidens begin district play on the road against Stephenville on March 16.

"Doctor" Jon Basso thought "Nurse" Bridgett was kidding when she informed the Heart Attack Grill owner that a customer was suffering some medical difficulties in the dining room.

The situation was, in fact, as serious as a heart attack. FOX5 News Las Vegas reports that this past weekend, a man in his 40s began experiencing chest pains while consuming one of the restaurant's signature 6,000 calorie "Triple Bypass" burgers. Basso, who is not a medical professional, called 911, and EMTs and paramedics arrived on the scene quickly.

The customer - or "patient" as they are referred to at the restaurant, which moved from Chandler, Arizona to Las Vegas last October - is reportedly alive and recuperating. Sadly, that's not the case for the restaurant's 575-pound spokesman, who died last March at the age of 29.

Heart Attack Grill is no stranger to controversy, actively courting fans and nayayers alike with slogans like "Taste worth dying for!" and "Cash only, because you might die before the check clears."

Menu items like lard-fried "Flatliner Fries," highly caloric "Butterfat Shakes" and unfiltered cigarettes abound, scantily clad female servers dressed as nurses take orders as "prescriptions," and a house policy allows diners weighing over 350 pounds to eat for free.

Still, Basso calls the incident "horrible," and had harsh words for those attempting to make light of it. He told FOX5 News, "The tourists were taking photos of him as if it were some type of stunt. Even with our own morbid sense of humor, we would never pull a stunt like that."

"Heart Attack Grill" was trending on Twitter throughout Wednesday, with sentiments such as, "Sorry customer at Heart Attack Grill in LV had heart episode. But you can't complain about getting the house specialty." from NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday host Scott Simon.

"I love this story for the irony; feel bad for customer," wrote ABC 17 News Weekend anchor and producer Evan Millward.

Basso claims that this is the first full-scale coronary that happened in his restaurant. The name of the patient has not been released.

LV woman severely burned in house fire after returning for cat - Pocono Record

A Whitehall Township woman who escaped her burning home but went back to retrieve a pet has died after suffering burns to her face and arms this morning, officials said.

The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. in a rear bedroom of the brick, single family twin home at 3308 N. Ruch St. in the Stiles section of the township. A couple and their adult son escaped the fire, but the wife re-entered the building to search for the family's pet cat, Fire Chief Robert Benner said.

First Deputy Coroner Paul Hoffman said the woman died around 1 p.m.

Benner would not release the name of the victim, but Lehigh County tax records show the home is owned and occupied by Richard Groller, 67, and Tina Groller, 56. Lehigh Valley Hospital said earlier it had a patient named Tina Groller listed in critical condition.

Three stations from Whitehall Fire Department responded to the call and quickly removed the woman from the home and began administering CPR before she was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

"They came upon her almost at the same time they were starting to try to fight the fire," Benner said.

The woman, whom Benner said likely was overcome by smoke, was found lying in the second-floor hallway.

He said the fire was under control in about 20 minutes. The fire started in the second-floor bedroom, which was gutted, and caused smoke damage throughout the second floor.

One firefighter was administered oxygen at the scene.

Fire crews started returning to their stations just before 6 a.m., but two engines remained on scene for several hours after the fire while the state police fire marshal and police investigated the cause of the fire.

Benner said firefighters did not find the cat in the house so it may have escaped and run away.

"Linsanity" has officially reached Las Vegas.

Sportsbook Bovada.LV?reports that gamblers simply cannot get enough of Knicks guard Jeremy Lin, who has led New York to six consecutive victories and delivered the game-winning points against both the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday and the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday.

Lin, a Taiwanese-American who went undrafted out of Harvard, has emerged as the NBA's feel-good surprise story of the year, driving insane amounts of global interest. The gambling numbers make it clear that Las Vegas is fully caught up in the narrative. (All figures discussed below are strictly for entertainment purposes only.)?

"The action has really picked up on NBA futures with Jeremy Lin making the Knicks the hottest team on the NBA," Bovada manager Kevin Bradley said. "Right now the Knicks are by far the biggest loser for the book."

According to Bovada, the pre-Lin Knicks were 40-1 odds to win the NBA title. Now, the Knicks are 18-1 odds.

Similarly, the pre-Lin Knicks, with a record of 8-15, were 22-1 odds to win the Eastern Conference. Now, with a record of 14-15, good for the No. 8 seed, the Knicks are 10-1 odds to win the East.

As recently as last week, New York did not look like a lock to make the playoffs, at all. Injuries to All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony, inconsistent play from All-Star forward Amar'e Stoudemire and major struggles in the backcourt left New York as arguably the NBA's biggest underachievers.

Now? Vegas says the odds that New York will make the playoffs are 1/5. The odds that they will wind up in the lottery are 3/1.

If that's not enough, the Knicks' over/under for season wins is now 36.5. To reach 37 wins, New York (currently with a winning percentage of .483) will need to finish 23-14 (a winning percentage of .622). Prior to Lin's explosion, the Knicks were winning at just a .348 clip.

The action is just as heavy on individual Lin bets as it is on the Knicks as a team.

Bovada has actually set Lin at 40/1 odds to win the NBA's MVP award, even though he has only started five games and appeared in 15 games total. The odds that Lin hits a game-winning buzzer-beater before the end of the regular season: 3/1.

What Lin has already done is undeniably incredible but some of these odds reflect superhuman expectations.?Not to be the stereotypical skeptic/doubter/hater/contrarian but this sure feels like a bubble.

It was shortly after midnight that the 18 knockout supermodels of Sports Illustrated’s brand new 2012 Swimsuit Issue touched down in Las Vegas after their launch party in Manhattan on Tuesday night.

Cover girl sensation Kate Upton -- we’ve written a few words about her and posted a few photographs and videos of her! -- wowed Tuesday night’s “The Late Show With David Letterman” audience in a sex-goddess Brigitte Bardot, figure-hugging red dress that accentuated all of her buxom beauty. Kate, who said that she’d always dreamed of being on the S.I. cover, wants to eventually become a Hollywood actress. She was the first to wake up in Las Vegas today.

Here’s the first video of her location shoot on the northern coast of Australia at the Great Barrier Reef.

Kate led her curvy cohorts to the Entertainment Capital of the World on the late-night flight: Cintia Dicker, Jessica Gomes, Izabel Goulart, Julie Henderson, Ariel Meredith, Alyssa Miller, Genevieve Morton, Bar Refaeli, Crystal Renn, 2011 S.I. cover girl Irina Shayk, Chrissy Teigen (John Legend’s fiance), Anne V and newcomer swimsuit rookies Adaora, Nina Agdal, Kirby Griffin, Jessica Perez and Michelle Vawer. They’re here celebrating with Time Sports Group President Mark Ford and S.I. Swimsuit Issue Editor M.J. Day.

We’ll have reports, photographs and videos from today’s welcome ceremony at Mastro’s Ocean Club in Crystals at CityCenter, where the models will show off their cooking skills with chef Wayne Shumaker, plus a handprint cement ceremony mid-afternoon at Planet Hollywood. Sports Illustrated also released today its first free iPhone app for this year’s magazine and models.

For the first red-carpet event tonight of swimsuit launch week in Las Vegas, the entranceway and interior of Haze in Aria will be transformed to bring to life the exotic worldwide locations that served as location settings for the model shoots.

I’ve learned that “Extra” host and actor Mario Lopez will MC the main-stage reveal and parade of the 18 glamour girls at Pure in Caesars Palace on Thursday night. Additionally, expect a surprise guest performer for the lovely ladies.

We’ll be back later today with our first photographs and video. On Thursday, we’ll have our first interviews with Kate and Bar, Leonardo DiCaprio’s ex-arm charm, and check out the reaction when I invite Kate out on a Las Vegas date!

BREAKING NEWS: Divided LV Council Chooses Special Election to Replace Wolfson - KLAS-TV

LAS VEGAS -- A divided Las Vegas City Council voted Wednesday morning to hold a special election to replace Steve Wolfson, who recently won appointment as Clark County District Attorney.

In a bizarre twist, a gridlocked council contacted Wolfson via cell phone while he is vacationing with his family in Hawaii to receive his input. Wolfson said he preferred an election, joining Mayor Carolyn Goodman, Stavros Anthony and Steve Ross. Rikki Barlow, Lois Tarkanian and Bob Coffin voted against it.

Wolfson's last day as city councilman is Feb. 20 and the election is scheduled for March 20.

Ward 2 residents interested in running for the open seat must file for candidacy. Filing will take place from 8 a.m. Feb. 21, through 5 p.m. Feb. 22, in the City Clerk's Office located in the new City Hall at 495 S. Main Street. The last day a potential candidate could have become a resident of Ward 2 was Jan. 23.

City of Las Vegas residents living in Ward 2 who have not yet registered to vote but who wish to cast a ballot in the Ward 2 Special Election can register in person in the City Clerk's Office now through March 3.

The City Clerk's Office is currently open for in-person voter registration from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Feb. 16 at 400 Stewart Avenue, First Floor, and from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21 through Feb. 29 at the new City Hall, 495 S. Main Street. The city clerk will have extended hours on March 1 from 7 a.m. through 9 p.m. and on March 2 and 3 from 9 a.m. through 9 p.m.

Early voting will take place March 15 and 16.

Vitamin D therapy failed to improve cardiac structure, function in CKD patients - Cardiology Today

In patients with chronic kidney disease, 48 weeks of treatment with the active vitamin D compound paricalcitol did not alter left ventricular mass or improve certain measures of diastolic dysfunction.

In the Paricalcitol Capsule Benefits in Renal Failure-Induced Cardiac Morbidity (PRIMO) trial, researchers randomly assigned 115 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), mild to moderate LV hypertrophy and preserved LV ejection fraction to 2 mcg/day of paricalcitol (Zemplar, Abbott) and 112 patients to placebo from July 2008 to September 2010. LV mass, renal function and laboratory measures were evaluated during a 6-week screening period. Vital signs and serum intact parathyroid hormone were measured and concomitant medications were recorded up to 48 weeks. Story continues below↓

Primary endpoint was change in LV mass index during 48 weeks by CV MRI and secondary endpoints included echocardiographic changes in LV diastolic function.

Within 4 weeks, treatment with paricalcitol reduced parathyroid hormone levels, according to results, and maintained levels within the normal range throughout the study. Researchers found that change in LV mass index did not differ between the paricalcitol (0.34 g/m2.7; 95% CI, –0.14 to 0.83 g/m2.7) and placebo (–0.07 g/m2.7; 95% CI, –0.55 to 0.42 g/m2.7) groups at 48 weeks. Similarly, the paricalcitol and placebo groups did not differ in Doppler measures of diastolic function, including peak early diastolic lateral mitral annula tissue (–0.01 cm/s vs. –0.30 cm/s). The paricalcitol group experienced more frequent episodes of hypercalcemia vs. the placebo group. However, researchers found fewer hospitalizations for CVD in the paricalcitol group.

In an accompanying editorial, Stefan D. Anker, MD, PhD, and Stephan von Haehling, MD, PhD, of Charité Campus Virchow-Klinikum in Berlin, said the study “adds to the overall evidence of the lack of effectiveness of active vitamin D compounds.”

Overall, they said improvement in important clinical outcomes should be the deciding factor for prescribing paricalcitol to patients with CKD.

“At this time, paracalcitol cannot be recommendd for patients with CKD. The PRIMO trial needs to be followed by a larger trial adequately powered to assess clinical endpoints such as cardiac-related hospitalizations, dialysis events and mortality,” Anker and Haehling concluded. “Considering the competition for public funding or clinical trials in CKD, the pro-vitamin D research groups may face an uphill battle to keep this treatment option viable for patients with chronic kidney disease.”

For more information:

Disclosure: Several of the study researchers report a financial interest with Abbott. Drs. Anker and Haehling report no relevant financial disclosures.

Nevada's economy not Romney's fault - Las Vegas Sun

Gary Shapiro, Arlington, Va.

Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 | 2:01 a.m.

In their Wednesday op-ed, “Romney’s ideas are wrong for Nevada,” Harry Reid, Bob Miller and Richard Bryan attempt to pin Nevada’s high unemployment and record foreclosures on Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

The writers’ only bit of evidence is that 1) Mr. Romney once said that the housing crisis had to “hit the bottom” before it could recover and 2) Mr. Romney made money by laying off workers.

On the former, I doubt Mr. Romney’s comments had the same effect on Nevada’s economy as Mr. Obama’s 2009 comments that criticized Las Vegas as a symbol of excess and greed. After that remark, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported 340 event cancellations that cost the local economy about $131.6 million.

As for Mr. Romney’s time at Bain Capital, I await Messrs. Reid, Miller and Bryan’s equally indignant criticism of Mr. Obama’s layoffs and factory closings at General Motors. In both scenarios, the layoffs were necessary to save the company.

By all means, elections are about the future, but let’s not forget the past.

Louis Vuitton Range Rover seen in UK: Overfinch Range Rover custom job - Rush Lane

Custom car paint jobs have long been the forte of the indulgent, and those who have something to say. But obviously that doesn't imply that everything we see whets our sensibilities. Overfinch, a Leeds-based firm works on enhancing Range Rovers, and this Louis Vuitton Range Rover is credited to them, though coating may have done by another involved party.

The Range Rover has the Louis Vuitton monogram printed over the car body, and a garish pink and white stripe runs through bonnet to bumper. The owner's initials, N.J.H finds its place on the bonnet. Vehicle wrap printed with the LV logo has been used ensuring temporary customising without the paint job being affected. This also ensures that the DVLA needn't be notified about colour change.

This Overfinch Range Rover could have come at £100,000. The company has outfitted Range Rovers with engine ramp ups, personalised interiors, and bodykit since 1975. Coleen Rooney owns 3 Overfinch Range Rover's.

Q&A with professor and author Richard Florida - Las Vegas Business Press

Monday, February 06, 2012 BY CAITLIN MCGARRY

Richard Florida believes downtown Las Vegas may hold the key to changing the city's economic future.

The University of Toronto professor and author of urban development guides "Rise of the Creative Class" and "The Great Reset" will be outlining the challenges facing Las Vegas and how the recession has inspired Americans to move back to urban cores during his speech at this year's Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Preview event.

"For the better part of three decades, we've been shifting to a knowledge- and creative-based economy," Florida said. "I'll talk about why this transformation challenges us and what we have to do about it."

COURTESY JOHN HRYNIUK | LAS VEGAS BUSINESS PRESS
University of Toronto professor Richard Florida will discuss challenges facing Southern Nevada and how the recession has inspired Americans to move back to urban cores at this year's Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Preview event on Feb. 9 at UNLV's Cox Pavilion. The key, he said, is cities. People are abandoning suburbs in favor of living closer to work and culture. If downtown becomes the hub of creativity in Las Vegas that city officials and Zappos affiliates dream it will be, it could drastically change the way Las Vegans live and work.

Florida recently spoke to the Las Vegas Business Press about downtown redevelopment and what he plans to tell business owners at Preview, which starts at 7 a.m. on Feb. 9 and runs at the Cox Pavilion on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus. Tickets are $60 for Chamber members and $80 for nonmembers.

Question: How does this "great reset" concept you've written about apply to Las Vegas?

Answer: I think that we've come to the end of this sprawling growth without growth, expanding the periphery of your metropolitan area by building houses. You're just shuffling money around.

We're resetting the way we live. Across the country, we see exurbs and suburbs starting to shrink and population beginning to shift toward the core.

People have come to realize that having a bigger house doesn't make them happy anyway. Every year, more and more people give up owning a home and move into condos or rent apartments.

You have this anchor company called Zappos (moving downtown), and not only building a headquarters but investing in housing, mixed-use projects, cafés, bars, restaurants. I think it's happening. It has a long way to go.

Question: Las Vegas has historically run on a service-based economy with a transient nature. Will those fundamentals need to change?

Answer: I don't think necessarily that Las Vegas needs to go out and build a knowledge-based economy. Las Vegas needs to add knowledge and skill to upgrade those service jobs. I think lots of the hotels have been starting to do that.

Certainly this is what Zappos stands as a model of.

The application of creativity can occur in many different professions. I think I'll be challenging the Chamber on that -- why not begin sharing and developing practices and programs and strategies, learning from Zappos and some of the big gaming companies, and helping our country learn how to make service jobs better jobs?

More of our country's economy will look like Las Vegas' than Detroit's. Our economy is going to be much more service-dependent than manufacturing-dependent.

Question: What can small-business owners do to contribute to a long-term, sustainable economy?

Answer: All of us are going to have to think of ourselves as entrepreneurs and small businesses.

My dad had one job for all his life. That's not the life most Americans want to live. We're going to change jobs. We're going to move more.

We've got to give small businesses a better chance to succeed. We do a good job with that with technology. We don't do a good job with mom and pops or small, artistic businesses. Las Vegas has become an incubator of lots of musical and creative acts. Why not develop creativity incubators to help these young bands?

Looking to small businesses to help each other and thrive lessens the odds of failure.

Question: How long will it take for downtown to be completely redeveloped?

Answer: When I was asked by Tony (Hsieh) and (former Mayor) Oscar (Goodman), I said a generation. Tony said, "We don't have a generation. We're going to do this in five years." You have a very aggressive set of actors who want to accelerate the process.

With someone like Tony, it could come together more quickly. You have people at CityCenter, very interesting in doing something in terms of urban fabric. It's happening across the city in different ways.

Question: What is the role of government in encouraging redevelopment?

Answer: Government should focus on making sure it's not overly regulating the heck out of stuff happening. Half the time, what delays it is regulatory codes, building codes, zoning codes.

At the margin, make sure you make the right transportation investments. Make sure the sidewalks are in order, making sure there (are) bike lines that are safe.

Maybe one of the things you could do in Las Vegas, instead of encouraging building in the periphery, encouraging reusing buildings in the core. When you start talking big dollars and urban revitalization, it's generally done more harm than good (like big stadiums).

Question: Last year, you told USA Today that East Fremont was one of the 10 up-and-coming urban neighborhoods to watch. Does it really compare to some of your other choices, like downtown Seattle and Chelsea in New York City?

Answer: I was looking for the nonobvious suspects. There are lots of übergentrified, high-priced designer digs. I wanted to focus on those places that were the next new. I think that's what Fremont and Fremont East (are). (They have) texture, soul, authenticity.

People come to Las Vegas and they look at the Strip. I wanted to say to the USA Today writer, "Go to the Strip, but don't miss this other thing."

Nicole L.V. Mullis: Hubba Bubba blues - Battle Creek Enquirer

I come from a long line of stress-buckets. It's not all bad. Stress has made me a deadline-driven writer, a college graduate with honors, a multi-tasking mama and a coffee connoisseur. It's also given me regular heartburn and, recently, a jaw that wouldn't open.

I love gum. Gum not only freshens the breath, it satisfies a stress-bucket's underlying desire to be in constant motion. Plus, it's cheaper, healthier and more socially acceptable than smoking.

The only school policy I regularly violated as a kid was over gum. In fact, I remember chewing gum in class while writing "I will not chew gum in class" 150 times on the chalkboard.

I keep gum in my desk, my purse, my pockets and my car. When I'm not nursing a cup of coffee, I'm jawing away on a piece of gum. I've even spit out gum only to replace it with more gum.

I also grind my teeth at night - sort of like chewing gum without the gum. Many dental professionals have pointed it out to me. They say it's stress-related. They say my gum habit and grinding problem are taking a toll on my jaw and fillings. They say if I don't chill out, there will be crowns and root canals in my future.

I believe them but what can I do? I can't control what my jaw does when I'm sleeping. And, well, I like gum. This is good for Dentyne and not so good for my dental work. I already have a crown, which has already fallen off and I can feel it making a second bid for freedom. I figured I was a hopeless case. Then, I got sick.

This virus flattened me, setting my joints on fire. The worst was my jaw. I had grown accustom to it being stiff, even clicking, but this was different. I struggled to open my mouth wide enough to take my antibiotics. I ate baby-sized bites of baby-type foods and had nothing hard or crunchy.

I still chewed gum. I know it was wrong but I was stressed. Besides, it didn't last long. I could only bear the pain for a few minutes.

After 10 days of antibiotics, I felt better everywhere but my jaw. It still hurt. Not only was I scared, I was sick of slurping soup.

I called the medical folks. They said since my jaw was inflamed before the illness, it would take longer to return to normal - well, whatever was "normal" for me. They suggested anti-inflammatories, warm compresses and relaxing.

Relaxing?

Didn't these people know I had been sick? I had 14 days of backlogged work on my plate.

I also had applesauce on my plate.

I was hungry. Bacon-double-cheeseburger hungry.

I emptied all my gum hidey-holes, giving them to my children and husband. I sat in traffic, mouth still, secretly loathing my family's healthy jaws. I worked at my desk, teeth unclenched, typing with unnecessary roughness. I sat through my daughter's soccer game, more conscious of the gum-chewing kid next to me than the score. I tried pretzels, Life Savers, Tic Tacs. Nothing worked. I was pathetic.

I was also better. I could move my jaw without pain or audible clicking. I had my bacon double-cheese burger and it was delicious.

Still, I miss my Hubba Bubba.

Louis Vuitton Condom Goes Viral on Twitter: Funniest Reactions - International Business Times

Kiziria designed a Louis Vuitton condom that is wrapped in the famous label's brown packing along with its iconic "LV" raised lettering. The condoms became a viral hit on Twitter on Wednesday, when it was one of the social network's trending topics.

According to reports, the high-priced condoms are priced at $68 each. But don't head to the Louis Vuitton stores just yet, because the condoms aren't available there. Kiziria is not affiliated with the Louis Vuitton company.

According to the Huffington Post, Kiziria collaborated with Design Provocation to design the fake condom. They had hopes of launching the Louis Vuitton condom on World AIDS Day, Dec. 1,?and donating the proceeds for AIDS research.

The Louis Vuitton condoms made the headlines last December, when they were reported on several news sites.

Louis Vuitton condoms, knitted boobs and meat leggings - Mirror.co.uk

By Gilly Ferguson Comments 9 Feb 2012 14:08 The weird and wonderful world of fashion begins here

French fashion power house Louis Vuitton have put the chic into sheaths today, as they announce the launch of their Louis condom line. Kind of.

The designer contraceptive has been trending on Twitter, despite not actually being one of Louis’ own.

All the wrappings of fashion? For $65 you can stay safe in style (and look like a right whopping poser) Louis Vuitton ???????????

Observe the lengths that some will go to to stay in fashion Holy sheath! Louis Vuitton make condoms? Err, no, not really... Louis Vuitton ?

Style kings Louis Vuitton may wish to tap into the Valentine’s market though, by sprinkling a little bit of Louis? love into an official LV condom collection. It certainly gets people talking (and the rest).

Priced at $65 for ONE (that’s £40 to those of us who prefer to use pounds) this LV-esque love doesn’t come cheap, and that’s before you factor in the shipping.

At that price you can only hope they throw in some free Louis lube (or ‘Loub’) while they’re at it too. Hell, they could even sign up cobbler the stars Mr Louboutin and make a whole sexy fashion franchise out of it…maybe not.

Read all about it HERE: Are fake 'Louis Vuitton' condoms the most fashionable thing to be seen in when you've got nothing on? ?

They wouldn’t be the only label to sex up their collections. Designer Marc Jacobs included a lorra $1.50 latex in his 2008 line calling his condoms "Remember Safety First” (and style second, yeah?).

Holy Sheath Part 2: The LV condoms may be a joke but Marc Jacobs released £1 condoms in 2008 ?

Christian Louboutin has put the actual SEX into sexy shoes too, with the launch of the Sex shoe (NB how many times can we say ‘sex’ in one sentence). We’d very much like to see Victoria Beckham in them – head here for pics Want to know what the Beckhams want this Valentine's? .

Degen have not only kick started New York Fashion Week, but they’re single-handedly pushing for a return of witty knits (ahem) accessorizing their sweaters with knitted boobs, naturally.

Thanks to Degen's Fall 2012 show, Sweater Breasts are back en vogue, and in your wardrobe!? Getty ?

Oh good, another udderly ridiculous fashion trend - nipple necklaces? Will you? WILL YOU!? Rex ?

And check out Oz label BlackMilk who have taken the phrase ‘flashing the flesh’ a little too literally and designed a pair of $75 meaty muscle leggings. Tasty.

Leg o' ham or big style sham? BlackMilk.com have designed a pair of meaty leggings for $75 - hear that GaGa?

Which is the weirdest trend? Have a vote below and let us know if you’re actually tempted to try any of these weird and wonderful trends, after Lady Gaga does, obvs.

The Zombie Cookbook That Lacked Enough Live Backers - The Awl

Sometimes, Kickstarter campaigns don’t meet their funding goals—but it’s not the end of the world! In this series we explore what happens next.

Freelance illustrator Gary Simpson began writing a zombie-themed cookbook called Dead Eats in 2009. In the summer of 2010, he took his idea to Kickstarter, hoping to raise enough money to create a few prototypes of the book to send to literary agents and publishers. After 60 days, Gary had received pledges for only $745 of his $1000 goal. Here he talks about the experience and shares a recipe from the book.

L.V. Anderson: How did you get the idea for a zombie cookbook?

Gary Simpson: Well, the actual day that I had the idea, I was at the bookstore. I live in a small town in northern California, and they have one bookstore, and there was an entire wall devoted to cookbooks. I was picking up books left and right, checking them out, and there was an essential theme going on to them; each one started getting into a genre, almost. There was a bacon cookbook; there was one for vegetarians, vegans; how to cook like a restaurant chef and stuff like that. But they’re all still a little obscure. Looking at the ingredient list, it was like, you need this pickled pear and you need this type of white peppercorn, which you might not normally have in your pantry.

And there was one particular cookbook that really struck me, and it was a children’s cookbook; it was a Star Wars cookbook. It had these awesome pictures of cupcakes and cookies, and they had these little Star Wars figurines next to them. And the whole Star Wars theme was really detached from the actual food, but they gave them really clever names, like a Wookiee Cookie. These quirky little things that would interest a kid and possibly their parent to cook with them, and as I was going through it, I thought, “Nobody’s made a zombie cookbook.” Which, at the time, we were getting more and more saturated with zombies.

Did you intend this to be in any way an ironic commentary on the zombie phenomenon?

You know, I actually loved horror movies growing up, and it was kind of one of those—not so much counterculture, but not everybody was into it. And it is ironic, the fact that everybody seems to love zombies now. So yeah, the whole thing is wrapped up in a tongue-in-cheek presentation, like, well, if you’re interested in food and you’re interested in zombies, then there’s a zombie cookbook.

Did you write the whole cookbook before you did your Kickstarter?

I actually did. A lot of these recipes I knew in the back of my mind anyway. ‘Cause my dad worked for a hotel chain, and he was a restaurant manager, and he had all these recipes that he passed on to me. And my grandmother was a big farm cook, always making these huge portions for everybody. She taught me a lot of things. And there was a point where right out of high school when I had to decide whether I wanted to do illustration and fine arts, or if I wanted to become a chef. I enjoy cooking on a personal level; I like being able to see people’s face when they’re eating it. So I decided not to be a chef. Since then, I’ve always been an experimental kind of cook, like, let’s try this ingredient with this and give it to friends and family and see how they react. I actually had a large database of food, recipes I had acquired. So yeah, I actually did write the entire thing first.

How would you describe the way that you cook?

A lot of these would now be considered comfort food. Now the Food Network’s basically telling us there are all these different types of cuisine, and a really big thing now is comfort food and slightly Southern cooking, and if anything it’s all in line with that. When I studied, it was underneath a French chef and later an Italian chef, so those traditional ways of making food carried over into making things like steaks, burgers, cornbread. You know, simple things that people would make at home, but in a kind of fancy way.

So tell me about some of the names of your recipes that evoke zombie-ness.

Well, there’s a Brain Stroganoff, which is similar to beef stroganoff, but in the actual appearance of it, in the end it actually looks like a brain on noodles.

How do you do that? How do you make it look like a brain?

Well, you take loose meat, which is basically any kind of ground meat. And you combine it with panko or bread crumbs, and cottage cheese or goat cheese.

Okay. That sounds disgusting. I mean, it sounds delicious, but it sounds like it looks disgusting.

Well, some of these things are supposed to be over the top, like you’d almost make it on a dare. Like you would with haggis, Scotch egg, something that’s like, “I can’t believe I just ate one of those,” or “I’m never going to touch that.” There are actually a number of people that it appeals to.

Tell me about the people that it appeals to. What kind of enthusiastic responses did you get? Or, on the other side, was anyone grossed out by this idea?

The gross-out factor was more that there was a couple of vegans that said, “Can you substitute something for this?” or whatever. But for most people, it was more the curiosity: What this is going to end up looking like, and what does it taste like? It changed people’s expectations. Everybody I talked to in person about it loved it. Like they wanted to see something from it. Which is great, which is kind of the whole point of it. Talking to people online, same thing. I contacted about thirty different literary agents, and within the first day, I got ten responses.

And there seemed like there was a lot of steam building up, and one of the literary agents told me that I should sit on it for about a year, because sales are down. The reason why you saw so many at the bookstores is the recession; people were trying to unload them. So at that point, after reaching out to see what literary agents might think of it, that’s when I got involved with Kickstarter to see what other people think about it.

What specifically were you trying to raise the money for? Was it to put together a more polished version of the cookbook?

Yeah. It was basically the final part in making a project. Something needs to be tangible. You can pitch an idea; you can give an elevator pitch or whatever, but people need to have something tangible in front of them before they can truly get 100% behind it. So the money was just going to get a finished product, print out a couple hundred of them, and send them off.

And so once you decided to start a Kickstarter, what kind of promotional stuff did you do?

Really, I didn’t do anything. I’d never tried Kickstarter before, and at the time it was still a young platform, so the very first month that I went into it, I really didn't do that much to push it. I only put in a couple updates, I offered some stuff, but it was a pretty cold start, because I didn’t know what Kickstarter was going to do, if there was a platform to launch off of, or if Kickstarter internally would do stuff. I wanted to see where it would go.

What did you decide to do after your Kickstarter campaign was over?

I went back to the cookbook; I revisited it; I edited the hell out of it. It’s got three more coats of polish on it. And I still have it.

Do you have a literary agent now?

Not one signed on, no. I have a number of people interested, but I’m not ready to move forward.

Why not? Are you still waiting for the right moment?

In a sense, yeah. As far as marketing or promoting it, you do need to devote a portion of time to it, which unfortunately my work schedule right now doesn’t permit. I don’t have that much personal time anymore. And the zombie cookbook, I know that if I was going to devote time to it, I’d have to devote a lot. I just don’t have the time for it yet.

How do you envision it? If it’s something that comes to fruition someday, do you envision it being a full-color cookbook with photographs, or do you think that since you’re an illustrator you would draw illustrations for it?

The basic outlook of it would be a very kitschy Betty Crocker book, something from 1950s or ‘60s, but re-visioned in a zombie apocalypse kind of way. There would be pictures, of course, just because I know personally people want to see that kind of stuff.

So true, yes.

But there’d be a lot of—people love information graphics, so it’d be like what part of a human body equates to what part of a chicken, like taste-wise. So there’d be information graphics detailing that, and we’ll take a cow and a pig. And there’s still a lot of introduction to it. I know being in the kitchen a lot, you shorthand things. Like what’s the difference between a pot and a pan? Or what’s a spatula? Surprisingly, a lot of people don’t know what these things are.

So you want it really to be a very educational, basic source.

Yeah. Like somebody who’s taking home economics in high school or middle school could even do this stuff.

Do you think cooking is something that people should do more?

I think cooking is very inspiring. It’s such a basic thing to want to make something, almost in a craft-like way. On a day-to-day basis, creatively, I have to do XYZ for a client, but I’m still inspired because I cook every day. Putting peanut butter on a hamburger; in some strange way that's fulfilling and it's refreshing, and I think that should appeal to a lot of people. They should want to learn how to cook. We gloss over these things when we’re growing up, like how to write a check, how to open up a bank account, how to cook, how to save money. Just odd things that seem like they should be fundamental.

Do you have any concern that the zombie moment is going to end before this cookbook gets produced?

Not particularly. It’s pretty much an industry at this point. It’s like saying there won’t be anymore vampire-slash-werewolf movies. They already found an audience; same for zombies. It’s not so much a genre anymore, it’s an actual industry. There are zombie snack foods now and zombie shampoo. It’s weird, but it’s an industry now.
